There is nowhere Craig Stishenko can’t get to on a bike.

For the second-straight year, the Parts Sales Person out of our Dawson International Truck Centres location in Kelowna, led our Dawson Bikes team last week during GoByBike Week in BC.

“We have some great cycling paths in Kelowna that make it easy for us to get around,” said Stishenko. “We ride our bikes everywhere: picking up groceries, going out for dinner and visiting family members. Basically, anything that we would use a car, we try to ride our bikes.”

After racking up an impressive 130-kilometres on his E-assisted as Class1 E-bike last year, Stishenko out did himself this year and logged 183km over the seven-day span both through the city and its surrounding trails.

“Not to brag or anything, but this is kind of a normal week for us. If anything, we did less riding. Normally, we ride out to Vernon on the Rail Trail, but we had a wedding to attend, which limited our rides this week,” said Stishenko.

Stishenko credits proper hydration and healthy diet for his success and giving him the fuel required to bike around the Okanagan.

Despite being down one rider from last year, our Dawson Bikes team still managed to outperform the totals from 2022.

GoByBike Week was originally referred to as Bike to Work Week. With everyone working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization changed it to it’s now name, as more people were working from home, but they still wanted to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

Keith Brenner, a Trade Journeyman Worker for Dawson Road Maintenance in Williams Lake, took a few subtle hints from his 20-year-old daughter and began biking to work for the first time last week.

“My daughter has been all over me about being healthier and looking after the environment more, so I pulled out my mountain bike and tried biking into work a few times. It takes me about 20 to 30 minutes, but the mornings are really nice here and I’d like to be a little bit more active at my age.

Some days I don’t have the motivation to do it, but I try and ride in at least a few times a week,” said Brenner. “She is pretty proud of me for doing so.”

Also contributing to the team were avid riders Brenda Fisher (Intermediate Accountant with Dawson Road Maintenance) and Tyler Lowey (Communications Specialist, Dawson Group).

The bike valet in downtown Kamloops was a hit during the Memorial Cup, as both Fisher and Lowey rode alongside the North Thompson to check out the hockey tournament.

“The weather was great and the bike valet made it easier to get downtown so you didn’t have to battle to find a parking spot,” said Fisher.

GoByBike Week was another successful way to improve our fitness and general wellness, while helping look after the environment and save a little bit of money along the way.

During the week of riding, Dawson Bikes rode 361 km (nearly the equivalent of a ride from Falkland up to Williams Lake) over 26 rides, burned 10,830 calories and saved 78 kilograms of greenhouse gases.
